About Babel World Literature Projects
Babel World Literature Projects are a group of related enterprises with the aim of promoting world literature in English translation and more generally cultural exchange.
Portuguese Literature Online
is an experimental website to encourage interest in Portuguese authors' work available in translation using maps, hyperlinked biographies and keyworded extracts.
Portuguese Literature Online is the first of the 'Babel Countries' websites, a part of Babel World Literature Projects which promotes world literature in English translation through interactive internet sites. The project was funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation of the UK.
The Babel Guides series
The Babel Guides are an expanding series of economical pocket reference works to what’s available in English from the literatures of the world for a non-specialist audience. Essential for public and academic libraries, students and general readers who want to expand their literary horizons.
Each guide has 100-odd original reviews of books by authors available in English, each review an enjoyable ‘trailer’ for the book with an excerpt as a taster.
At the back is a complete database of all fiction translated into English since 1948, with original titles, publication year, translators etc. Available in printed and e-boook (pdf) format.
Latest information on the series including special purchase offers at: babelguides.co.uk
Our archive site on World Literature in English translation
at www.babelguideslegacysite.co.uk This is a modified version of the old babelguides.com site which provides links to thousands of books (many with professionally written reviews) of World Literature in English translation published up to c2004.
Especially useful is the 'browse books' by origin/source language search box. There are also extensive author and publisher listings.
Boulevard Books (UK)
was set up by Ray Keenoy in 1989 to bring contemporary authors from around the world into English translation. To support the market for such books by ourselves and other publishers we created the Babel Guides book series in 1994 and have worked since then with publishers, national governments, arts funders, libraries and bookshops to improve access to the translated literature of the modern period.
Babel World Literature Live
Organizes tours and exhibitions featuring world literature for libraries, arts centres and theatres. Also seeking participants and partners for a proposed World Literature festival in an English city.
Babel Cultural Heritage Ltd
Is a company limited by guarantee for charitable ends that oversees non-commercial and charitably funded aspects of our work.
